Where Did Potatoes Originate?
Potatoes originated in the Andes, first cultivated by the Incan people over 8,000 years ago. Over the centuries, potatoes became a staple crop, essential to the culture of Peru and Bolivia.
It’s no wonder potatoes today are so adaptable. The Andes are a high-altitude environment with cool temperatures, rocky soils, and intense sunlight. It’s a tough place to grow other crops, but potatoes thrive.
As the world grew more interconnected in the 16th century, the domesticated potatoes we know today made their way from South America over to Europe, then spread to Asia, Africa, and North America shortly after. Today, potatoes are grown on every continent except Antarctica.
Where do Potatoes Grow in America?
Potatoes are grown throughout America, with Idaho and Washington being the nation’s two biggest producers. In 2024, Idaho grew 13.52 billion pounds, while Washington was close behind with 10.13 billion pounds, and while Idaho grows more pounds, Washington grows more potatoes per acre. In fact, Grant County, WA, is the number one potato-producing county in the nation because of its rich soil; long, hot summer days; cool nights; and sustainable growing practices.
Why is the Northwest such a potato hotspot? Thanks to rich soils, a long growing season, available water sources, and a commitment to sustainable innovations over the last century has led to the highest yields in the country.
But the Northwest isn’t the only place potatoes grow in the United States: They’re grown commercially in 30 states. While most farms are in the north, you may be surprised to learn that states like Texas and Florida also grow millions of pounds of potatoes each year.
Where do Potatoes Grow Around the World?
Asia
Most potatoes in the world are grown in China and India. These two countries combined grow over eight times the amount of potatoes the United States does each year.
Half of China’s potatoes are grown in the north, where cooler weather and shorter seasons allow for one crop to be grown per year. Potatoes are also grown further south, with warmer weather allowing for multiple crops to be grown in a year.
In India, farmers plant potatoes during the cooler winter months instead.
Europe
European cuisine is well-known for its love of potatoes, and its agriculture reflects this. Ukraine and Russia are the third and fourth-most prolific growers of potatoes in the world. Together, they grew nearly 40 million tons of potatoes in 2022.
Countries like Germany, France, and Poland also grow millions of pounds of potatoes each year. Much of Europe has a temperate climate and fertile soil, ideal for growing potatoes. In many regions, a single crop of potatoes is grown per year, and fields are sustainably rotated with grains and other crops.
Africa
Over 27 million tons of potatoes were produced in Africa in 2023, mostly in Egypt, Algeria, and South Africa. Countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and Malawi are important growers too, with small-scale farmers providing much-needed food to their local communities throughout the year.
South America
Potatoes are still grown in their original South American home to this day, with Peru producing six million tons of potatoes per year.
The International Potato Center (CIP), based in Lima, is doing important work to meet the growing needs of potato farmers and consumers around the world. It’s collaborating with global partners to develop new potato varieties with added resilience and nutrition, which will help combat food scarcity in the future.

Potatoes are a filling and hearty addition to any meal, which has never been more important with global food insecurity on the rise. Having a steady supply of healthy food helps support global access to nutrition at a price every person can afford.

Potatoes are some of the least expensive vegetables available on the market, costing just $0.30 per cup. Only dried beans clock in as a less expensive option.
How can they be sold for such low prices? While other staple crops take a lot of space to grow, potatoes can produce plentiful food on relatively little land. As well, potatoes mature quickly, taking three to four months on average to grow.
Their efficiency as a crop makes them an especially valuable option in regions where farmland is limited or where there’s high population density.
Availability Year-Round
Because potatoes grow around the world, harvest seasons overlap throughout the year. When fields in the Pacific Northwest are harvested in the fall, growers in South America and Asia are just starting to plant their own crops. A staggered production schedule helps stabilize access to food throughout the year.
In addition, potatoes store exceptionally well. Climate-controlled storage facilities allow farmers to preserve their crops for months after harvest, supplying markets and processors long after the growing season ends.
